Did you know that dry needling can help with painful and restrictive scarring? Needling can impact collagen and elastic fibers (the connective tissue cells that makes a scar) by mechanical stimulation of tissue by the needle.
The image below demonstrates dry needling work on an extensive scar due to surgery and radiation treatment. This scar is 10 years old.
The patient had complaints of skin tightness restricting function, increased and decreased sensitivity to the skin, and pain with movement. After one session of dry needling, the patient has gained 8 degrees of range of motion at the joint, improved motility of the skin and reduced pain with functional movement.
