Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is characterized by weakness and rapid fatigue of any of the muscles that you can voluntarily control. MG is caused by breakdown in the normal communication between nerves and muscles. MG has no cure, however treatment can help relieve signs and symptoms.
Symptoms include: difficulty breathing, seeing, swallowing, chewing, walking, using arms or hands and holding up your head.
MG can affect people of any age, however it is more common in women younger than 40 and men older than 60.
With MG your immune system produces antibodies that block or destroy many of your muscles’ receptor sites for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. With fewer receptor sites available, your muscles receive fewer nerve signals, which results in weakness.
